Spring, Playgrounds, and Zippers

At around this time (probably week 4 of being home?!) I was starting to pull out my camera more!  Not only were we going outside but we were all starting to adjust back to normal sleep patterns, and the boys were starting to get used to being home.  Although there were still temper tantrums and sharing issues, I felt like everyone was more relaxed and finding their place which I was very thankful for!

Although it was spring, we still had quite a few chilly days as you can tell by the coats in the playground pictures below, so I put Cole in this cute little zip up sweatshirt outfit and I couldn't help but crack up as he was trying to figure out how to get the zipper down!  And when we finally did the look on his face was priceless :)  Oh our little Cole how we love him!

A recipe, a Christmas story, and a Christmas card

So this past weekend Dan and I were brainstorming what to do for his co workers for Christmas.  I honestly think that getting gifts for co workers can be the hardest gifts to think of.  You want to show you care, but when you have 5+ you are buying for you don't want to spend too much money because that adds up quickly.  So obviously I headed to Pinterest and found some awesome Peppermint bark recipes.  Throw it in a mason jar with a bow on top and voila: an easy, not too expensive Christmas gift!  (And we threw in a dunkin donuts gift card for good measure, because people are obsessed with dunkin donuts out here on the East coast :)

And I wanted to share our Christmas card this year :)  Thanks to our photography class I was able to design it on picmonkey and upload it to shutterfly to get it printed!  It was WAY cheaper than using one of their cards.  Yay for saving money around the holidays, right?!

And lastly, this is quite possibly THE cutest video.  It's the Christmas story told by kids and it is so so cute.  If you get a couple minutes you should definitely watch it :)

You may not be a Steelers Fan...

... but even if you aren't you should watch this video!  I grew up in a torn family- my brothers being Browns fans and my parents being Steelers fans (We were born in Pittsburgh and they grew up there).  I'll have to admit, I cheer for the Steelers more mainly because they win more :) And, I have always liked Troy Polamalu, and this video proves why.

Favorite Christmas Song

Seeing as Christmas is less than week away, I decided to start to get into the spirit of the season :)  Honestly, it's hard for me to focus on anything Christmas related the week before or during finals.  Now that it's over, I feel we can finally enjoy it :)

Sooo, I wanted to share with you my favorite Christmas songs this year.  First, is my favorite "old" Christmas song- by that mean I've been listening to it for the past 5 years or so.  Definitely the first one I listened to back in late October :)

This is my new favorite Christmas song.  My church recorded it and actually just started listening to it a couple weeks ago. I love finding new Christmas songs :)

Hope you had a great weekend!

Monday Video

So this weekend I didn't get around to uploading my pictures from the weekend (but I revamped the blog a bit!) so I have a video that I've been wanting to post anyway- so I'll let you enjoy that and have the weekend updates tomorrow :)

I actually have never seen a full episode of Glee in my life, but I like Adele and their dancing in this video so that's why I'm sharing it with you.

Happy Monday :)

Put a Bird on It

I'm sure a lot of you have seen this, but like I mentioned last week, Mariel and Paul showed us some videos and this was another one.  Love it. Have a good weekend!

I'm in the mood for a good laugh

When we hung out with our friends Mariel and Paul this weekend they showed us a couple new YouTube videos.  This one about Organic food was hilarious. I'm sure I'll be sharing some others later on :) Happy Thursday!

Back in Chicago

We had SUCH a wonderful weekend.  We relaxed by the pool.  We ate lots of great food.  We took naps. Watched football.  Experienced a whole lot of Texas.  Caught up with Dan's family.  And hung out with some wild cats.  I know, get excited for pictures :)

But, because we got home last night at 10:00 and are barely unpacked... putting up pictures was unfortunately not going to happen.  Until then enjoy this cute video.  Don't worry, I don't think that ducks were harmed while being filmed.

Happy Tuesday!!

A mix of things

I have been LOVING the weather here in Chicago.  It has been perfect.  June was kind of cold.  July was scorching hot.  But August has been amazing.  I can't stop taking pictures of anything outside because I love being outside.  So here's some pictures I've been taking recently.

Annnd, because I can never get enough watching people commit their life to Christ, here's a video from Steven Furtick's church (from yesterday's post).  Love it.

Still recovering

This weekend was SUCH a whirlwind of events for us.  One one hand, we haven't laughed so hard in a long time, but on another hand, Dan and I are exhauuuussstteed.  And sore.  Oh so incredibly sore.  I'm beginning to wonder if I felt this sore after the marathon.

We spent the weekend at Luke and Brittany's lake house with their friends from med school and spent the days jet skiing/ tubing/ water skiing (or attempting to) and the nights talking and taking late night swims on their boat.  The saying for the weekend was "Conditions were perfect."  If you're unfamiliar with where that's from, watch this hilarious video.

From there, we drove straight to watch Dan's brother, Jeff, pitch an awesome game against the Joliet Slammers (he's on the Traverse City Beach Bums) and got in around 1am last night.  Can we say sleep deprived?  On top of that, water sports + continuous shutter mode on camera = I have over 400 pictures to look through.  Definitely worth it, though.

On that note, I'll leave you with this video.  As if the other video I posted wasn't PG -13 rated enough, this one may top it.  If you avoid the inappropriate language around the last chorus, you'll be ok.  It so perfectly describes the experience Dan and I had during our one and ONLY visit to Whole Foods that I had to post it.  Happy Monday :)

so. incredibly. cute.

Please tell me this little girl (part where she's laughing on the bed) is not the CUTEST thing you've ever seen?  It kinda makes me want one...

I like to sing..

I tend to serenade Dan a lot.  I'm almost positive it's more than he would like, but we're married, so it's kind of something he committed to :)  Anyway, the other morning when he was having trouble getting out of bed, I decided to sing this song to him.  I even had an invisible microphone.  It was pretty powerful.

Unfortunately, I only knew the first verse and chorus, so we both cracked up when I just went right back to the beginning after I belted out a pretty intense chorus.  I guess you had to be there.

On a more serious note, it's actually a really good song.  Not only the actual song, but the lyrics.  One reason why I love it and I think it sticks in my head is because the words are SO true.  It's a super encouraging song.  I hope you like it, too :)

Oh, my God, He will not delay
My refuge and strength always
I will not fear, His promise is true
My God will come through always, always

Troubles surround me, chaos abounding
My soul will rest in You
I will not fear the war, I will not fear the storm
My help is on the way, my help is on the way

Monday Morning Humor

It's Monday.  Who doesn't need a good laugh?  I love how Kevin DeYoung posts "Monday Morning Humor."  This video I found pretty entertaining, I hope it brightens your morning :)

Happy Friday!

It is another sunny, beautiful Friday here in Chicago. I love Trinity's campus this time of the year!  Well, minus the overpowering smell of mulch everywhere you go :)  As much as I'm ready to be outside all the time, unfortunately we have a weekend of studying ahead of us :/  But, we will slip in a quick date night tonight to Olive Garden, though. (thanks Mom and Dad for the gift card for Easter!)  Even though it's Olive Garden, I'll probably get dressed up to show off the mani/ pedi that I got with my friend Rachael yesterday!  It was the first time since since my wedding, which means treat for me but not the lady doing my toes!  Runner's feet are not attractive.  Anyway, it was SO wonderful.  I could see how people do that once a month.  I hope that you have time to get out and enjoy what (seems to be) a nice weekend!
I also wanted to share with you some fun links from around the web:

How crazy is this?  I can barely see him!

I thought this project was such a cute and creative idea.  I just need to find some old scrabble pieces . . .

I stumbled upon this blog and cannot get over how real these pictures look.  Some are actually a little creepy!

You know how I shared that other blog where she posts what she wears every day?  Here's another one that I love.  I'm so thankful that women are gifted in putting together cute outfits so I can copy them :)

These two songs have been on repeat at work:

Lastly, I saw this a while ago but my friend Emily tweeted about it today and I remembered how I wanted to share it with you!!  Maybe I'll try wearing my scarf a new way out to dinner tonight :)

Swagger Wagon

I know I'm not a parent so I can't *completely* relate to this video.  But I thought it was funny nonetheless :)  Happy Tuesday!

Tedashii and Snowpacolypse

So the blizzard is officially here.  Thankfully we still have power, but I wouldn't be surprised if it we lost it- the wind is going CRAZY outside AND we just saw lighting and thunder- in a snow storm.  Unreal.  It's actually kind of fun- I got out of work 30 minutes early (even though it took me 1.5 hours to get home!) and Trinity is closed tomorrow which means no class tomorrow night either!  Since I already stocked up on groceries (I don't even want to begin to tell you about my grocery shopping experience on Monday night- you would think that the world is coming to an END) Dan and I are going to work from home tomorrow, catch up on reading, and watch movies :) Such an unexpected treat for a Wednesday!  Here is some video footage of the storm I took tonight- it's a little hard to see (for some reason it shows up MUCH better straight from my camera than uploaded on here!):

On another note, Dan and I were doing a quiet time together and this song came on our iTunes and we forgot how much we LOVE the lyrics to this song.  I'm a total K Love listener so this is definitely not my "style" of music per say, but this is one song I like :)

Stay warm if you're getting hit by the snow storm tonight!!

Snow!

It's the first day of the season that it has really snowed in Chicago!  Remember a couple weeks ago we hit an awful snow storm in South Bend and I was disappointed because I was hoping that the first time I saw snow was when I woke up on a Saturday morning and downtown A Heights would be covered? Well, I got my wish today!

Dan and I went shopping yesterday and after watching this video I couldn't help but think how great it would have been to see this in person!

Humor and Birthdays

Today I wish my younger brother a VERY happy 24th birthday!!  For the next 5 days Doug, Jon, and I are the same age- making us Chinese Triplets.  I think it's cool, so I thought I'd share it with you :)

Annnddd I found this video really funny- I hope you enjoy it!!

Things I don't do

These past few weeks since the marathon have been pretty quiet- which is a good thing.  We've had time to go to church (which is something we have missed because of our busy weekends!), catch up on school work- much needed, and hang out with friends.  All wonderful things :)

A while back I told you that I went to see Shauna Niequist speak.  It was really fun because she read a couple chapters out loud from her book "Bittersweet" and the way she spoke sounded exactly how I imagined she would sound as I read her book.  She read one chapter from her book called "Things I don't do" which actually is the chapter that made me want to buy her book in the first place.  (I came across her blog randomly, and she had a couple chapters posted from her book- and you can read that particular chapter here.)

I can totally relate to her as she writes this chapter- there are so many times when I get caught in this cycle of wanting to "do everything better" which is not healthy or biblical.  Her friend Denise gave her some great advice: "It's not hard to decide what you want your life to be about.  What's hard is figuring out what you're willing to give up in order to do the things you really care about."  So profound, yet so simple that it makes me wonder why I didn't think of that.  After Shauna read her chapter aloud, she asked us to write down our list of do's and dont's.  I'm so glad she encouraged us to do this because this was something I wanted to do a while back, but as life is, things got busy and I didn't get around to it.  Even though I didn't finish my list that night, these past weeks I have been adding to it and this is what I have come up with so far.

Things I [try] do:
  1. Keep Christ at the center of everything I do.  He is the reason I am here, He is the one who gives me purpose, He is the one who gives me peace, and in this world I desperately need to cling to a savior.
  2. Invest in my marriage.  I read a convicting devotional from a divorced woman pleading that we pursue our spouses and don't let our marriages get complacent.  Even though I *knew* this- it is still a good reminder that we always need to be pursuing our spouse- even when we think things are "o.k. or going well."  Keeping consistent date nights and finding ways to serve Dan is definitely a priority.
  3. Be the best I can at my job- creating visit experiences that allow students and families to experience Trinity at it's best - a place where students can grow spiritually, emotionally, and academically.  And, growing closer to my co workers in the process.  I work with some amazing people and am daily blessed by them.
  4. Work hard at my classes. God has give me the amazing blessing of taking classes at Trinity and He's given me a passion for counseling and helping people.  I hope to use this opportunity to learn and grow in preparation for the future ministry that could be entrusted to Dan and I.
  5. Keep in close contact with my friends.  Whether they are here in Chicago, from college or high school-  I have learned that I need women speaking truth into my life and that fellowship for Dan and I is MUCH needed.
  6. Organizing.  I love organizing.  It can go overboard for sure- so it's something I need to watch. But when I'm stressed, I organize.  It can be anything- drawers, the refrigerator, magazines, coat closet- you name it, I'll organize it.
  7. This is very vague- but I'm working on finding beauty in everything every day.  Whether it's through photography, or just slowing down and going on a walk.  I have the tendency to book it through life looking for the next thing I need to do (hence my "list" problems) that I don't ever slow down.
Things I don't do:
  1. Shop organically.  I am sure it is healthier... and sure it could be better for me, but for now we don't have the funds so normal food will have to do.
  2. Pay more than $20 for a haircut.  Yes I have had some bad experiences at Great Clips, but here in Chicago, after the tip, $60 just isn't worth it to me.
  3. Paint my nails.  It takes up too much time and only lasts a couple days.
  4. Antique shop.  I desperately wish I had this gift- the gift of walking into an antique store or a garage sale and upholstering this old trunk and turning it into a beautiful coffee table- but unfortunately I don't have that gift.  And trust me, I've tried.  It's just not there lol
  5. Scrapbook.  I have multiple friends who scrapbook- and they're so good at it.  They give them away as gifts, use it as a serving opportunity, and are super creative.  Unfortunately, I just don't have that gift, or the time.  For now Shutterfly albums will have to do!
  6. Shop at Anthropology.  Not only do I not have the money, but I also just don't have the skill to put together outfits from there.  I desperately wish I was that trendy girl who stepped out of one of their magazines, but again I don't have the "eye" for that sort of thing.  It makes me sad sometimes, but I'm slowly getting over it.
  7. Fold underwear and turn shirts inside out when I wash them.  Does this bother Dan?  You better believe it (the inside out shirts)!  But, life is just too short to do those kinds of things.  I still recognize my shirt if it's inside out in my drawer- so what's the point?
  8. Always say "yes."  This is a work in progress, but I'm working on it.
I've realized that a lot of things on my "don't do" list are qualities/ gifts that I see in other people that I want to be my natural qualities or gifts.  Last year in my Bible study we talked about how everyone in the study has unique gifts, and it's so easy to get caught up in the cycle of wanting a little bit of everyone's gift and not being content in who we were created to be.  I want her gift of hospitality, her ability to cook/ bake, her decorating skills, her cute style, her gentle spirit, her amazing personality that draws everyone in, her artistic/ musical skills, her close walk with the Lord... etc etc.

But, this past week as I've been compiling this list and thinking about who I really look up to and what I want my life to be about, I realized that I don't really want my life to be about fashion, decorating, etc. (even though it's super easy for me to get caught up in the fact that I do).  The Lord has definitely gifted some of my friends in those ways- but what I struggle with is idolizing those things and wanting to be known for them.  I discovered these past couple weeks that I would rather be known as the woman who is real and honest- those are the women I look up to.  I want to be someone that others can share their struggles with- someone you can relate to, rather than the woman who can do it all and that others idolize to be.  I don't want to be known for my perfectly decorated home, or my cute fashion choices, (or in the words of Shauna, that woman with a "challenging career, beautiful home, and well tended abs.")  but for the way I love the Lord.  The woman who is confident in who she is in Christ- flaws and all.

So, I would encourage you to make a list like this if you're like me and want to do it all!  I think you'll be surprised about what you really want to do, and what just takes up time :)

Sorry that was long- that's what I get for not posting in a while lol

Oh, and on a totally other random note- how cute is this girl!?

Happy Monday!

Funny video

There are a lot more things that I could write about today, and maybe later on I'll have more time.  But, for now our friend Andy showed us this video on Saturday night and I honestly can't stop laughing everytime I watch it.  If your humor is like mine... I think you'll find enjoyment out of it too.  Just as a warning, Dan wasn't laughing quite as hard as I was lol

Usher . . .

Happy Tuesday!
