Capturing Childhood

God is being so so sweet to me this Friday afternoon by having both of my kiddos napping at the exact. same. time.  Cole has been sleeping for two hours- seriously it's a miracle!  I have been trying SO hard to get him to stretch out his naps, and I think since he found his thumb, it's working lol  I know he will probably have issues later on related to teeth, emotional issues, (insert any story you've heard about thumb sucking kids here) but right now I think he looks so cute when he does it and it gets him to actually sleep by himself instead of screaming in his crib, so it's a win for the moment :)

I thought for sure this winter would be really rough on me.  For some reason the last couple winters emotionally have been hard.  I don't know if it's being inside all day, the dreary days, etc., but the last couple years right around now I have been thrilled to see any sign of spring breaking through.  And thankfully we actually have had some spring like days which is such a shocker for February in Chicago.  I've realized that God has us go through many seasons, and although life with a newborn has its moments, right now we feel lots of joy for where He has us.  Jake is at such a fun age, and although I get sad thinking that he will be FOUR soon and I have visions of him going off to college, I love watching him grow.  I can't wait for him to try out tee ball and I love his little imagination and personality that is emerging.  And I think because it's been so long since we've had a little baby in our house, everything with Cole is new and exciting too.  He's sitting in his bumbo now and giving us tons of smiles (when he's not tired or hungry lol).  I really feel incredibly blessed for this season.  And I'm trying to take as many pictures of it as I can to remember it all :)

Oh my word Jake looks SO big here. Insert crying emoji's here

Another Lakehouse trip!

A couple weeks ago our friends invited us back to their lack house for another get together with the kids!  Obviously it was cold outside so we didn't do anything "lake" related like we did last time, however we still had a blast hanging out with all the kids and their parents.  With all the kids it's easy to be concerned about someone getting hurt, however every single dad there is a doctor so we don't even have to worry about that :)  Dan does a great job bringing his business perspective to the group :)  It's so fun being able to keep in touch with all these families even though they all live in Indiana and Michigan.

And it's in these settings that it's really interesting to see how Jake's little personality is coming out.  He's most definitely an introvert (at least for now!).  At times we couldn't find him amongst the mass of kids in the basement and we would go upstairs and he would be playing by himself.  He wasn't upset or anything- he just wanted to be by himself for a bit.  So unlike his mom who loves to be around people :)

We can't wait to hang out with everyone again hopefully in the near future!

Some much needed updates!

I have to apologize for the lack of updates.  Between Cole, lots of sickness, and photography sessions, the kids naps are taken up with either my naps or editing!  Thankfully, my body is adjusting to getting less than 5 hours of broken sleep so I'm not as exhausted as I was at the beginning!

This January has been so fun for many reasons, but mainly because I was able to do 5 photography sessions for our adoption!  It has been SO fun to do these sessions - I love learning new things each time, and I love knowing that we are getting closer to raising the support we need to bring our little kiddo home :)  I am so thankful for all the families who have let me take their family photos!  The hardest part is trying to fit in website updates and little side projects with a newborn- I forgot how sporadic their naps are!  It's just a season though, and thankfully I know that now more than I did with Jake.  So, we are just enjoying snuggling with baby Cole when those unexpected wake ups happen!

And speaking of Cole, he is finally getting over his cold and ear infection!  It seriously has been a rough couple months for him.  His cough was actually pretty scary, and we had to take him to the doctor a couple times to figure out what was up with him.  Thankfully, his cough didn't turn into RSV or anything more severe than just a cough!  And, he didn't get Jake's sickness of the flu and diarrhea.  I swear he didn't eat anything for almost a week and he had me worried!  However he is definitely making up for it this week which I am so thankful to see!  I knew something was up when Jake didn't eat his fries at Outback a couple weeks ago.

We also just recently signed Jake up for preschool in the Fall!  Oh my goodness I have NO idea how we got here!  My little guy going to preschool!  While I know it is going to be so good for him and I know he will enjoy it, I think the transition will be hard on both of us.  But we did some research and took the tours and we think we found one that will be a good fit for him :) So we will keep you updated as that approaches!

We also have officially found a church here and we are looking forward to getting involved :)  I'm also doing another Shepherding a Child's Heart Bible study and it has been SO good to be back in community and fellowship.  And even though I've read the book and done the study before, I am totally being convicted all over again of what it looks like to be a godly parent and how to best Shepherd the kiddos that God has entrusted to me.  I could write a novel about what God's teaching me- and I hope that I get the opportunity to share more of that in another blog post!
Also, we haven't done too many updates with our house since Cole came, but I hope to put up a post soon showing pictures of our before (and almost finished) after!  Even though it's easy for us to focus on all the things that still need / we want to do, it is good for us to stop and look back on how far we have come!  And I really do love our home.  I love how open it is, and I actually am loving the raised ranch feel and that all of our bedrooms are on the same level... and I never thought I would say that!  What a blessing it is.  We are so thankful :)

Here are some pictures literally from the beginning of January.  I'll get to posting some newer ones soon :)  Thanks for keeping updated on whats going on with our life!

3 months {Cole William}

Oh, Cole, how this month was full of so many ups and downs!  On one hand you are getting cuter by the second, and on the other hand you have had your fair share of winter illnesses for only being here for less than 100 days!  So let's dive into the details.

  • Yes you got your second cold, and your first ear infection this month.  We have been through our fair share of vicks chest rub, humidifiers, saline drops, boogy wipes, and naps sleeping upright on us.  And your poor little cough was the worst thing I'd ever heard for such a little baby! Let's hope for a healthier month three, mkay?
  • I'm going to ignore the fact that your brother was basically sleeping through the night right around now when he was your age as last night you went to bed at 9 and woke up at 12, 2:30, 5, and 7:30.  I'm blaming it on your sicknesses.  And your morning smiles make up for it :) that and three cups of coffee.
  • You still nurse every two hours, but I love your chunky rolls so that's ok with me.. for now..
  • And yes, you still have all that hair!  It's crazy and definitely a conversation starter everywhere we go.
  • You are looking more and more like your brother which is fun to see :)
  • At literally nine weeks you rolled from your back to your stomach.  You are one strong and determined little man!
  • There is something about the little owl we have hanging on your car seat because you love smiling and talking to it all day long.  Which makes for much easier car rides these days (hooray!)
  • And our little panda friend that plays music has been a life saver during some of your fussy times. And Jake and I both find ourselves humming its tunes throughout the day lol
  • You still don't suck the pacifier but you gnaw on it- maybe you're teething?  Who knows.  I am going to blame teething on everything from now until you are two.
  • We have had success with the bottle! (all the praise hands emoji's) Some nights are easier than others for you to take it, but you take it.  And that's all that matters.
  • Your smiles and giggles are so fun.  Your dad and I could sit there and make you smile all day long :)
  • You are exactly like Jake in the fact that you do not like to be held facing inward, you like to be held with your face out so you can see everything that is going on.  So much for using the ergo carrier that we put on our registry years ago!
  • Your big brother still adores you and always wants to know what you are doing and where you are at all times :)  You will learn so much from him in the years to come!
  • And lastly, the floor jungle gym is by far your favorite toy these days :)
  • We LOVE watching you become more aware of who/ what is around you!  You are such a joy and huge blessing and we love seeing what each month has in store for us!

Adoption Update: Changing Countries

This is a really hard post for me to write.  Not only because it is hard to share what has happened that led us to switch countries, but also because it is difficult to articulate how I am excited about adopting a child from our new country, while simultaneously have struggled letting go of the hopes of adopting the child we have been praying for from Ethiopia.

I wrote a post a couple weeks ago asking for prayer because our adoption agency was closing down their partnership with Ethiopia.  Things have slowed down so much and the referrals are so few that it was imminent.  And really, while it was a shock to hear the news at first, looking back you can almost see the writing on the wall.  When we first started the adoption process back in September of 2014, we were told we could potentially have a referral for a child that summer (2015).  As time went on not only was our referral time pushed back to potentially years, the time between when you receive a referral and when you actually bring the child home was also pushed back to almost a full year.  And this isn't anything that our agency was doing, it was unfortunately just changes in the country that have caused the process to slow down.

So we were given a couple choices- switch to another agency who is still working with Ethiopia and pay a fee, switch countries, or back out all together.  Backing out wasn't an option for us, so we had to decide to either switch to a different agency who still had a partnership with Ethiopia or switch countries.  And let me tell you, this was really hard.  A huge part of me just wanted to go with the other agency who was partnering with Ethiopia and pay the fee.  However after we really sought God through prayer and spent countless hours discussing with each other and the social workers at our agency all the options, He seemed to be pushing us toward the (only) other option for our family: China.

When we started the adoption process we didn't have a specific pull toward a country.  We just felt called to adopt. period.  Next, was deciding the country.  From the start, we were very excited about adopting from Ethiopia, and thankfully it fit our family circumstances (some countries you need to stay in the country for 6 weeks when you go to pick up your child, and that just isn't an option for us,while others you needed to be a certain age to adopt, like 30, such as China).  So for almost a year and a half we have been praying and envisioned our family with a child from Ethiopia.  We have T shirts, pictures, cookie cutters, books, and Christmas ornaments that all pertain to Ethiopia.  We were very excited about adopting a child from Ethiopia.

However, since we started the process in 2014, there are many things that have changed, and there are MANY factors that went into our decision to switch countries (money, time, age, etc. just to name a few) but the main reason we switched is because of the uncertainty with Ethiopia.  Our sweet social worker walked us through all the reasons why our agency had to shut down their partnership, and one of the statistics she told us was really alarming.  When we started the process there were 24 partnerships with Ethiopia, and now there are only 4 agencies remaining who have a partnership with Ethiopia.  And honestly, it didn't surprise me to hear this either because as we called agencies in Illinois to update our home study and we told them we were adopting from Ethiopia, they were all very surprised to hear that we were still working with an agency that was partnering with Ethiopia because all of the ones that they knew of were closed or on hold for the moment.  With so much uncertainty around what is going to  happen with adoptions in Ethiopia, we decided to switch countries to China.

We are VERY excited to adopt from China.  There are many many children in need of loving homes in China and we are excited to get our home study updated (we have to wait until Cole is 6 months before we can do that) and continue with the process of completing our Dossier.  While the wait time is much shorter (potentially a year to a year and a half) we know from past experience that anything can happen.  So we will have a much better idea of when we could potentially have a little guy or girl after our Dossier is complete and we are on the waiting list.

We want to say thank you so so much for your prayers as we had to make SUCH a difficult decision. It was not easy at all.  A good friend encouraged me by saying that it was completely normal that I was struggling with balancing my feelings of excitement about adopting from China and sadness about not adopting from Ethiopia.  In the end, Dan and I are passionate about following God's calling to be a light in this broken world and to redeem parts of this world that are hurting by welcoming a child into our home that doesn't have a family - and ultimately the country doesn't determine that.  Whether the child that is matched with our family is born in China or Ethiopia or another country, we feel privileged to be called by God to fight for the fatherless.

And so this is just another part of our story.  And we don't expect this to be the last surprise along the way.  Everyone said to have open hands throughout the adoption process, and so that is our goal.  And it's not always easy (as we are experiencing it first hand), but we are excited to see where God is continuing to lead us.  Thank you again for all the support you have given us along the way!
